lyrics
You have green fingers
I wish I would have inherited them
All my plants are dying
I had to throw out half of them
While your garden is blossoming
And you know all the names
Of every flower
Of every tree
Of every berry
Of every leaf
One summer there was a heron following you around
Flew to you while you were watering your dahlias
It accompanied you to the lake
Where you once killed a snake
Afterwards we had blueberry cake
And I would always
fake, fake, fake, fake,
Fake, fake, fake, fake
Fake, fake, fake, fake
”I love this cake”
Sometimes you’d lock eyes with me
Your mind be far away and you’d say
“How old are you now?”
I’d say “I’m twenty-five”
And you’d go, “oh”
“Oh, it must have been twenty-five years then!
Since the love of my life passed away”
The love of your life
I never met him
We put flowers on the grave
And he’s in my DNA
What we inherited from him
I don’t know
What we inherited from you
I’m not sure
But if I grow up to be anything like you
It will do
At your funeral
There was a heron circling around
Maybe it came to say farewell
Maybe it was you
How could I tell?
I was only present in my mind
And through a live-stream
From Germany
I will always
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream
Of having instant coffee in the garden with you
A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
I feel like I could have written this song while with my ex. It is so bitingly truthful, holding back none of the bitter reality of feelings that a toxic relationship establishes. The build up of vocalization is spitting, heartwrenching and really brings the lyrics to their fullest emotional potential.
Can’t describe how much I love the juxtaposition of extremes recurring throughout this album, both lyrically and thematically. izze32
